AICAR (5-aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide ribonucleotide) is a cell-permeable analog of AMP (adenosine monophosphate) that, once inside cells, is phosphorylated to ZMP, a molecule that mimics the natural AMP signal and activates AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK).
